There’s something special about road trips in the Pacific Northwest. Whether you’re heading east to the Cascades, cruising west to the coast, or planning a long weekend somewhere else for Memorial Day, hitting the road is half the adventure. Sunshine, playlists, open roads—but there’s one very important pit stop before you go. A vehicle inspection.
Before you load up the snacks and set your GPS for adventure, it’s a good idea to check in with something that doesn’t always make the packing list: your vehicle’s health.
At Tom’s Automotive in West Seattle, we’ve seen our fair share of pre-road trip scrambles—and the not-so-fun breakdowns that happen when warning signs go ignored. A comprehensive vehicle inspection is the best way to make sure your trip starts and ends on a high note without any check engine light surprises.

Why Get a Vehicle Inspection Before a Road Trip?
No one wants to spend Memorial Day weekend or their summer vacation stuck on the shoulder of I-5 waiting for a tow truck. A vehicle inspection gives you peace of mind by catching potential problems before they become road trip-ruining disasters.
Here’s why it matters:
- Safety: Brakes, tires, lights—these aren’t just mechanical details; they’re the foundation of safe driving.
- Reliability: Prevent unexpected breakdowns or system failures, especially in areas without cell service or roadside help.
- Savings: Catching minor issues now (like low engine oil or a worn belt) can help you avoid major repair bills later.
- Comfort: Summer road trips = hot car interiors. Making sure your air conditioning is working properly can turn a sweaty ordeal into a breezy ride.
What’s Included in a Pre-Road Trip Inspection?
We get it—most people don’t know exactly what’s under the hood (or want to). That’s what we’re here for. At Tom’s Automotive, our pre-trip inspection includes a full look at your car’s most important systems and parts, including:
Battery & Charging System
We test the battery strength, check for corrosion, and ensure your alternator is working properly. If your battery is on its last leg, we’ll let you know before it leaves you stranded at a scenic overlook. We give a five-year warranty for most batteries if you need a new one.
Brakes
Brakes aren’t something you want to give out, whether it’s during a trip or just your daily commute. But when you’re road-tripping across the country, they’ll be getting extra use—so make sure they’re ready for it. We’ll inspect the whole system, including brake pads, rotors, brake calipers and fluid levels. If you’re hearing squeaks, grinding, or feeling a soft pedal, now’s the time to speak up.
Tires
Check tire pressure, tread depth, and overall condition (including the spare—yes, that’s important!). Good traction is especially key for mountain or rural drives. Worn-out tires also mean a higher chance of blowouts.
Fluids
Oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid—you name it, we check it. And if you’re due for an oil change, we can take care of it during your inspection. Checking your vehicle’s fluids is something to do regularly anyway, but especially before a long trip.
Belts & Hoses
Worn belts or cracked hoses can turn into big problems fast. We inspect them for wear and tear and replace anything that’s showing signs of age. You may want to find out if your vehicle is due for a timing belt replacement, if it breaks it can be really bad news fast!
Lights & Wipers
Visibility is non-negotiable. And on long drives, you might be getting the full spectrum of light, dark, rain, bug splatter, and dust. We’ll make sure your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and wiper blades are in working order.
Air Conditioning System
This is a big one! If your air conditioning isn’t blowing cold, or the fan sounds weak, don’t wait. The last thing you want is to be stuck in traffic in a hot car with cranky passengers. We’ll inspect your HVAC system and repair your A/C if needed.
Don’t Forget These Road Trip Preparation Tips
Our biggest recommendation is a comprehensive inspection at the shop, but a few small steps at home can also help keep your trip smooth and stress-free.
- Bring a roadside emergency kit: Jumper cables, a flashlight, basic tools, a first-aid kit, water, and snacks—having these on hand can make a big difference if something goes sideways.
- Check your phone charger: Is your phone mount secure? Got a working car charger? Double-check the essentials, especially if you’re relying on GPS.
- Clean your car: While optional, this can certainly make your trip more pleasant! Besides, your car deserves a refresh every now and then, and what better time than spring? Vacuum out the interior, throw out any accumulated clutter, and get a car wash.
Not Sure If Your Vehicle’s Ready? We’ll Help You Find Out
Every vehicle is different. Maybe you’ve got a trusty sedan that just hit 150,000 miles. Or maybe your newer SUV hasn’t seen much highway action yet. No matter what you drive, we’ll tailor your inspection and make sure you’re good to go.
Plus, we’ll take the time to walk you through anything we find—what’s urgent, what can wait, and what you should know about your vehicle’s needs moving forward. We don’t do pressure or scare tactics. Just honest answers from your local West Seattle auto shop that cares.
